MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Maple Grove Senior High boys hockey coach Gary Stefano won’t be returning next season, after he got a letter from the Osseo School District on Feb. 19 informing him that his contract won’t be renewed.
While he will remain a teacher in the district, his 17th year coaching Maple Grove will be his final one in the wake of 13 of his players getting suspended for an off-ice incident at a private home earlier this season.
The incident had violated laws than are in the Minnesota State High School League’s code of conduct. Due to privacy laws, officials couldn’t specify any details.
Stefano won’t comment on what happened, but said he is owed an explanation as to why he’s not being renewed.
“What did I do wrong? I don’t know,” he said.
The school district released the following statement, “Maple Grove Senior High administrators are looking forward to hearing stakeholder perspectives as the school begins the process of hiring a new head hockey coach.”
