WinchFest Outgrows Front Yard, Moves To Buck Hill

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) - A one-of-its-kind winter sport had its day Saturday at Buck Hill in Burnsville.

WinchFest 2013 celebrates a sport dreamed up by brothers Alex and George Miller. They started it a few years ago in the front yard of their parents' Mendota Heights home.

Winch boarding combines snowboarding and wake boarding. A wakeboard wench pulls the snowboarders up a ramp, where they're able to do tricks and complete a course.

Co-creator George Miller says WinchFest is about extreme fun.

"That's really what this is all about…blending sports and pushing it and really just having a great time on a sunny day," Miller said.

The event moved to Buck Hill this year because it's gotten too big for their front yard. And the extra snow meant they could build a tougher course.

Red Bull has picked up the event and helps sponsor it.
