MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota United FC is the new name of the state’s professional soccer team.

The change from Minnesota Stars FC was revealed at a news conference on Tuesday. Also revealed at the event was that former UnitedHealth Group chief executive officer Bill McGuire has taken ownership of the franchise. McGuire completed his purchase in January. He retained Manny Lagos as head coach.

The Stars have been playing in the eight-team North American Soccer League, a level below Major League Soccer, which has 19 teams.

Minnesota United’s season opener is on April 6 at the Metrodome.

FC stands for football club, using the European term for the sport.

Previous pro-soccer teams in Minnesota have included the Thunder, the Strikers and the Kicks.
