Jones Leads Apple Valley To 1st State Hoops Title

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Highly recruited Tyus Jones had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead Apple Valley past Park Center 74-57 to win the Class 4A state boys basketball championship Saturday night.

Dennis Austin added 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Eagles (31-1), who won their first state title.

Quinton Hooker led Park Center (28-4) with 18 points.

With Michigan State coach Tom Izzo watching, Jones had 11 first-half points before scoring on a 3-point play and a layup to start the second half for a 37-25 lead.

Jones later set up Dustin Fronk for a fast-break layup and Jones completed another 3-point play for a 58-40 lead with 6 minutes to play.

Jones, the nation's No. 2-rated junior, was 18 of 18 from the free-throw line. He also had five assists.
