DPS Urges Teens To Drive Safely During Prom Season

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says springtime is a good time for parents to talk to teens about safe driving habits.

DPS's Office of Traffic Safety says spring is an exciting time for teens — with the end of the school year approaching and prom season in full swing. But it is also a dangerous period on the roads.

DPS says that over the last three years, 30 teens died in motor vehicle crashes over the months of April, May and June. Nineteen of those teens, or 63 percent, were not buckled up.

Summertime months are also deadly for teenagers. Over the past three years, 32 teens died during the months of July, August and September.

DPS says traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for Minnesota teens.
