Walk Seeks To Help End 'Book Famine' In Africa
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- A three-day walk will raise money to help end what organizers call the "book famine" in Africa.
It begins Friday morning at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie and cover 68 miles, ending Sunday evening at the Books For Africa headquarters in St. Paul.
Books for Africa founder Tom Warth says they're trying to call attention to the great need for books for African students, raise money for the cause and honor UW-Stout for all its support. UW-Stout has donated thousands of used books worth more than $500,000 over the past 15 years to Books For Africa.
Participants can walk, bike or run any part of route that suits them while carrying a university-donated book.
Books For Africa has shipped over 28 million books to 49 different countries since 1988.
