Police: Teen Hit By Train In Isanti County In Critical Condition

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities said a 19-year-old woman is in critical condition at a hospital after being hit by a train Wednesday afternoon in Isanti.

The Isanti County Sheriff's Office responded to the accident at about 3:35 p.m. between South Passage and 273rd Avenue NE. When they arrived, a female was spotted conscious and alert on the west side of the railroad tracks after being hit by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.

The victim, identified as 19-year-old Elena Bayerl of rural Isanti, was airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center and is in critical but stable condition. Authorities said she was walking along the train tracks with two men. The men saw the train and yelled at her, but Bayerl didn't hear them or the train because she was wearing headphones. The men also tried to grab her before the train struck her, but it was too late.

The accident is still under investigation by the Isanti County Sheriff's Office and the BNSF Police Department.
