MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The 64-year-old Brainerd man who died and a 4-year-old boy who was saved after their canoe capsized have been identified by authorities.

At 2:12 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the report of a capsized canoe and two people in the Gull River just north of Baxter, Minn.

Residents who live near the river heard a cry for help and responded, pulling the boy, Thadeus Strader of Gilbert, Ariz., out of the river. Strader was treated at the scene and was taken to Essentia Health in Brainerd.

Peter Johnson was pulled from the river by paramedics and law enforcement further downstream. He was unresponsive and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. Johnson’s body was taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner to determine the exact cause of death.

Both victims were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.
