Another Segment For Gitchi-Gami Trail

SILVER BAY, Minn. (AP) -- Add about 2 more miles to the Gitchi-Gami State Trail for bicyclists, runners and walkers along U.S. 61 between Two Harbors and Grand Marais.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Gitchi-Gami Trail Association officially opened the 2.3-mile segment in the Silver Bay area. It runs south across Northshore Mining property and continues to the east end of West Road in Beaver Bay.

More than 28 miles of the Gitchi-Gami are complete, although they are in segments. The complete trail will eventually run 86 miles between Two Harbors and Grand Marais.

That's a stretch that includes five state parks and several scientific and natural areas, as well as historic sites.
