MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Authorities are investigating an attempted murder-suicide that has left one dead in northwestern Minnesota Wednesday night.

The Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 57000 block of County Highway 56 in New York Mills at about 9:13 p.m. Wednesday after a report from a 21-year-old female that gunshots had been fired at a residence. When authorities arrived, they found two men who had been shot.

A 20-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 23-year-old man was unconscious and taken to the Wadena Tri-County Hospital. That man was then airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital, where he remains in critical condition on life-support.

The 23-year-old man was initially reported as deceased, but an update was sent out at approximately 10:45 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene in New York Mills told authorities the 23-year-old man shot the 20-year-old man before attempting to take his own life.

Authorities have not identified either man in the incident pending a notification of family, and the incident is still under investigation.
