Holiday Hiring Already In August? You Bet

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The State Fair is still a week away, but stores are already thinking ahead to winter.

From the decorations to the seasonal hiring, the holidays are trending earlier and earlier each year.

Michael Hagie, owner of the 50th and France boutique Gather, said inquiries for holiday gifts started months ago.

"We have a lot of out-of-town customers who are asking what is available right now for Christmas," he said.

Hagie said with more inventory comes the need for more seasonal employees, a hiring process he starts in August.

"You're going to get the pick of the litter," he said. "The earlier you're going to be recruiting people, the better."

Hagie said this year the push toward Christmas came earlier than last.

"Every year it's trending just a couple of weeks earlier," he said.

His vendors are shipping earlier each year.

"Especially in the gift business, that's what we're in business for -- the fourth quarter," he said.

Other stores hiring for the holidays include Macy's, Herberger's and Kohl's.

While some stores are only looking for employees for a couple months, there are some listings posted as six-month positions.
