Police: Suspect Dead After Shooting Crow Wing County Deputy In The Arm

CROW WING COUNTY, Minn. (WCCO) -- A man is dead and a sheriff's deputy was shot in the arm after a shootout Wednesday near Brainerd.

Officers were called to check on someone on Sleepy Hollow Road near St. Mathias on Wednesday afternoon.

When officers arrived, they found a man in a tree with a gun. They talked him down, but then the suspect ran back into the tree and shot an officer in the arm. Two other officers then shot and killed the man while he was in the tree.

The injured deputy is set to be released from the hospital.

"Not only is he physically dealing with being shot, but mentally knowing he could have taken that round in several other places than the arm," Sheriff Todd Dahl said. "Chances are he will be dealing with it for the rest of his career."

The suspect was 50 years old and the sheriff said police have had dealings with him before. The officer, who has not yet been identified, was treated at a hospital and has been placed on standard administrative leave.
