United Way Calling For Volunteers On Day Of Action

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Thousands are taking action across the metro Wednesday as their goal is to help those who are in need.

Wednesday is The United Way's Day of Action, the kick-off to the group's 2013 campaign. Volunteers are serving up breakfast at the Catholic Charities in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday morning among several other opportunities across the Twin Cities.

Kathy Hollenhorst with the United Way said that over the lunch hour, there will be opportunities for speed volunteering in Minneapolis and St. Paul, where people can do a good dead in as little as 15 minutes. Volunteering activities will take place at the U.S. Bank Plaza in downtown Minneapolis and the Ecolab Plaza in downtown St. Paul.

There will be five different stations, including a dental station and a place to help put together healthy snack packs. They're also helping put packages together for students as they head back to school.

There will be a competition Wednesday afternoon and evening at the Mall of America in Bloomington in the rotunda from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Hollenhorst said company teams will be competing in contests where they'll have chances to donate additional money to charity. There will also be volunteer opportunities in the rotunda.
