MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minneapolis Police Department released a statement Thursday concerning the May 10 officer-involved shooting in Uptown that left two officers injured and a 22-year-old suspect dead.

The statement from police said Chief Janeé Harteau was notified by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office that the May 10 case will go before the Grand Jury sometime next month.

After the Grand Jury reaches a decision, the statement says, Harteau will discuss the case in full.

The case concerns the death of Terrance Franklin. Police say he was a fleeing robbery suspect who broke into a home on 27th Street and Bryant Avenue S. In the basement of that home, a scuffle ensued that ended with Franklin’s death and two officers suffering gunshot wounds.

No official statement has been given as to what exactly happened in that scuffle. But sources told WCCO after the shooting that Franklin got a hold of an officer’s gun and shot the two officers.

Since the shooting, Franklin’s family and friends have demanded more information on what happened. They’ve held marches downtown, and Franklin’s parents have accused the department of using racial slurs during the shooting. Harteau called that allegation “not only preposterous but without merit.”

Since she said that, however, the department has been under scrutiny following two incidents in which officers allegedly used racial slurs in Apple Valley and Green Bay, Wis.
