Patrol: Semi Driver Killed In Fiery Golden Valley Crash

GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. (WCCO) -- A fiery four-car crash Friday morning in Golden Valley left one man dead.

The victim -- 64-year-old Joseph Johnson -- died after his semi was hit by a driver who ran a red light at the intersection of Highway 55 and Boone Avenue around 11 a.m.

A minivan driven by 66-year-old Shirley Knutson was turned left onto Boone Avenue and ran a red arrow, striking the semi. She is now at North Memorial.

The semi then swerved into a light pole, and it fell onto the cab of the semi, caused an explosion and trapped Johnson inside.

The state highway patrol is investigating, explaining the explosion made it difficult to get to Johnson in time.

No one else was hurt, but two other cars were hit by flying debris or the other cars.

A four-way stop will be in place at least through Friday night until the wiring can be fixed and a new light system can be installed.
