ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) -- A St. Cloud man lured his mother to his apartment by pulling a medical alarm and then stabbed her to death the morning after his 52nd birthday, according to recently filed charges.

Dean Allan Friese has been charged with second-degree murder in the incident.

Authorities were called to the scene at 3:58 a.m. on Saturday at the 400 block of 33rd Avenue South.

There they found Lois Arlene Omeara dead of what were determined to be stab wounds.

Friese was taken into custody and booked at the Stearns County Jail.

Investigators say that Friese pulled a medical alarm in his apartment, knowing that Omeara would respond. He grabbed a knife from the kitchen and, when she entered the apartment, stabbed her at least eight times. The majority of the stab wounds were concentrated on her torso.

Susan Rowe, who lives in the same apartment, told WCCO she had just talked to Omeara on Friday about her son's birthday.

"From what Lois said, they typically went out to dinner for the birthday and then shopping. He didn't want anything to do with it. He said he didn't feel up to it," Rowe said.

Friese told investigators that he had thought about killing his mother earlier.

Friese's bail has been set at $1.5 million with conditions, or $3 million without conditions.
