Another Year, Another Stellar Mankato West QB To Watch

MANKATO, Minn. (WCCO) -- Down at Mankato West, they have a reputation for good football teams and good quarterbacks.

Signal caller Ryan Schlichte is filling some big shoes that were left behind.

However, he should be a good QB, given his family tree.

"My dad played football in college -- he played at MSU, coached at MSU also," he said. "My brother plays football up at University of Minnesota Duluth. It's been in my family my whole life."

He thrives on what the position asks for – he wants to be in the middle of the action.

"I just like the fact that my teammates trust me and I accept that leadership role," he said. "I'm involved in every single play."

The QB before him is current Gopher field general Philip Nelson.

"When you turn on the TV on Saturday you're always seeing on how Phil is doing," he said. "The fact he was on this team and I was on the same team as Phil is just really cool."

And Nelson is keeping tabs on his replacement.

"He's a great player – he's a student of the game," Nelson said. "He does a lot of film study."

Schlichte is following on that path that may include a college future, if he stays mentally tough.
