Gophers’ Leidner Earns Big Ten Honor After Big Game
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – After a big game in a big win over San Jose State on Saturday, Gophers quarterback Mitch Leidner earned some Big Ten Conference recognition on Monday.
Leidner, a redshirt freshman from Lakeville, ran for 151 yards and four touchdowns as the Gophers finished 4-0 in the non-conference schedule after a 43-24 win over San Jose State. He was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week on Monday. Leidner, in his first career start, tied a school record for quarterbacks with the four touchdown runs. Curtis Wilson did it against Indiana in the 1967 season.
Leidner is also the first Gopher to run for four touchdowns in one game since Marion Barber III did it against Ohio back in 2003. He’s the second Gopher to receive the honor as Philip Nelson got it last year on Oct. 29.
Minnesota opens its Big Ten Conference schedule against Iowa at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
