Bridge To Honor Ex-Minneapolis Mayor

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A bridge will be dedicated Tuesday night to former Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton.

The Minneapolis bridge, which carries Third Avenue South over Interstate 94, will be dedicated as the "Sharon Sayles Belton Bridge."

A new public sculpture honoring Sayles Belton's accomplishments will be officially lighted on the night of the dedication.

Sayles Belton was the first woman and first African-American to serve as mayor of Minneapolis. She served as mayor from 1994 to 2001.

The city first built the bridge in 2000, under Sayles Belton's leadership.

The event will include performances by Larry Long, Robert Robinson, J.D. Steele and Tonia Hughes.
