New Chief Judge Of Minn. Appeals Court Being Sworn

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Judge Edward Cleary is starting his stint as head of the Minnesota Court of Appeals at his former high school.

Cleary was to be sworn in as the court's chief judge Monday at Cretin-Derham Hall High School. The St. Paul Catholic school is where Cleary graduated from in 1970.

Gov. Mark Dayton elevated Cleary in September to the top job on the state's second-highest court. He becomes the seventh person to serve as the court's chief judge.

Cleary has been a judge in Minnesota since 2002 when he was put on the Ramsey County bench. He was named to the Court of Appeals in 2011.

The appeals court handles thousands of cases each year.
