Debunking Some Medical Myths About Vitamin D

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – As the days are getting shorter we're getting less sunlight. We hear a lot about Vitamin D and how it's good for our skin, but there's also plenty of myths out there about it.

Dr. Jess Prischmann joined the WCCO This Morning show to address the truth about some misconceptions with Vitamin D. So where do we actually get Vitamin D?

Prischmann said we can get it from the sun and you can get it from food, but it's a myth to think you can get it exclusively from food. Natural food sources, she said, are pretty rare for Vitamin D. That's unless you're eating a lot of ocean salmon or egg yolks.

Prischmann said we often don't get Vitamin D effectively from the sun because most people use sunscreen when we're outside.

There are also theories that a healthy supply of Vitamin D can help prevent cancer and diseases like rheumatory arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Prischmann said Vitamin D is critical for bone health and skeletal health, but it's also associated with certain diseases including depression, cancer and arthritis. She said we can't say a low amounted of Vitamin D causes those, but there is an association.
