ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota AFL-CIO is backing Gov. Mark Dayton and U.S. Sen. Al Franken in their re-election bids.

The union, one of Minnesota’s largest, announced its choices Tuesday in Minnesota’s two major political races next year. The AFL-CIO generally backs Democrats, and the picks are not a surprise.

The union praised Dayton for pushing tax increases on upper-income earners, policies aimed at job creation and improved schools, and support for collective bargaining. It praised Franken for maintaining a 98 percent AFL-CIO voting record and called him “a champion for working families in the Senate.”

Both Dayton and Franken have a number of Republican candidates seeking to run against them.

The AFL-CIO represents more than 300,000 union members in Minnesota.
