MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A blast of bitter cold will keep Minnesotans chilled going into the new year.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for central and northeastern Minnesota through Tuesday morning. Wind chill advisories are out for the rest of the state except for the southwest.

Embarrass in northeastern Minnesota bottomed out at 40 below zero at 6 a.m. Monday. International Falls fell to 37 below.

Light snow also made for a slippery commute in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area Monday. The Minnesota State Patrol reports hundreds of crashes in the metro area.

Highs Tuesday are forecast to range from 15 below to zero statewide. Lows will plummet to 5 below to 15 below in the south and 20 below to 40 below in the north.
