State Patrol: 1 Killed In Freeborn County Head-On Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A 20-year-old South Dakota man was killed Tuesday in a head-on crash on Interstate 35 in southern Minnesota, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities responded to the crash at about 6 p.m. On I-35 near mile marker 18 in Freeborn County. When emergency crews arrived, they learned a 2008 Ford truck was traveling southbound on I-335 and a 1997 Ford Taurus was headed northbound when the Taurus lost control, crossing the median into northbound traffic.

The vehicles hit head-on in the southbound lanes, killing the driver of the Taurus. The Minnesota State Patrol identified the victim Wednesday as Steven D. Selvig of Platte, South Dakota. The driver of the truck, a 62-year-old man from Hollandale, Minn., was not hurt.

Authorities said conditions were icy at the time of the crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol with assistance from the Freeborn County Sheriff's Office.
