MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Minnesota Twins open the 2014 regular season next week in Chicago, but the team announced Monday its plans for the April 7 home opener against the Oakland Athletics.

First pitch, weather permitting, is scheduled for 3:10 p.m. at Target Field. Events will start bright and early with Breakfast on the Plaza from 6 to 9 a.m. Fans are invited to drive down 7th Street for a free breakfast. Free food and beverages will also be provided to pedestrians and bicyclists.

The gates to Target Field will open at 1 p.m. with former players Bert Blyleven, Tony Oliva, Kent Hrbek and Tom Kelly on hand to open the stadium to fans. Local a cappella group Home Free will perform on the field at about 2:30 p.m. They will also perform God Bless America during the game.

The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown out by Barkhad Abdi, a Minneapolis-based actor who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in the movie “Captain Phillips.”
