MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – A Maple Grove city councilwoman who pleaded guilty to a charge accusing her of stealing thousands of dollars from her dying father has been sentenced to serve 60 days in the Hennepin County Workhouse.

Leann Sargent, 63, specifically pleaded guilty to one felony count of financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult on the morning of Feb. 5.

According to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, Sargent had power of attorney for her sick father. From 2008 until the time of his death in March of 2012, she took more than $153,000.

Officials said Sargent’s sentence includes two years of probation after the 60 days, and she must pay over $120,000 in restitution.

The severity of Sargent’s conviction was decreased from a felony to a gross misdemeanor by the judge.
