MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – At least one person is dead after a crash involving four vehicles, including two semi-trucks, in northwestern Minnesota Wednesday morning, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities responded to the crash at about 4 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 94 at milepost 24 in Clay County near Barnesville. When authorities arrived, two vehicles were traveling on eastbound I-94 at Highway 34 when one of them lost control while trying to pass the other.

Those vehicles collided, sending one of them off the road and into the median side, where it hit a guard rail and bridge pillar.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities identified that victim as 43-year-old Steven J. Olson of Moorhead.

The driver of the other semi, 53-year-old Thomas Harrington, Jr. of St. Paul, suffered no apparent injury.

The State Patrol said what led up to the crash is still under investigation, but road conditions at the time were icy with snow falling at the time. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is providing assistance.
