Police Arrest Driver Who Fled After Killing Pedestrian On Mpls Sidewalk

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A driver who fled on foot after hitting and killing a man who was walking on a Minneapolis sidewalk Friday night has been arrested.

According to Minneapolis Police, the accident happened just after 10 p.m. near the intersection of West Broadway Avenue and Logan Avenue North. The victim, 65-year-old Charles Lord, was hit and dragged a short distance by a van that had driven up on a sidewalk.

Lord's brother told the Star Tribune that Lord was about to take a Nice Ride bike to his part-time job at the downtown post office.

Witnesses say the van stopped after hitting a building on Broadway Avenue, and the driver, 32-year-old Eric Charles Lee, fled the scene.

When police arrived, witnesses were assisting Lord, who had suffered severe injuries. He was later pronounced dead at North Memorial Medical Center.

Officers arrested Lee Saturday just after 11 a.m., and he's being held at the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center.

WCCO checked Lee's record and found he was arrested last year on suspicion of speeding and driving without a driver's license or insurance. He also has two previous misdemeanors of disorderly conduct.
