MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – At the start of each month, the WCCO Morning Show likes to give you a spending forecast, so here is the inside scoop on what experts say are the best things to buy in May.

First things first (and this may sound weird), May is a good time to find spring clothing on sale. Current season apparel has been on the shelves for a couple of months now, so in order to make room for new summer styles, retailers offer big discounts. Memorial Day weekend will be your best time to buy.

If you’re looking to get that perfect beach body, May is also a good time to get a gym membership. Seek out promotions that cut costs like initiation fees or give you some free time at the gym.

May can be a great time to upgrade your old appliances. New models of vacuum cleaners debut in June, making this month great for snagging a late model deal. Similarly, refrigerators also come out with new models later in the summer so finding a deal in May is easier.

Not everything that seems seasonal will be a bargain right now, though. It may be the start of barbeque season and many will be rushing out to buy that new backyard grill. But if you can, hold off until June or after the 4th of July to get a new grill. Also, prices on pools and hot tubs won’t be too cool in May. Prices are expected to rise with demand, so wait until the colder months to purchase those summer items.

Also, unfortunately, if last-minute shoppers have waited until now to buy traditional Mother’s Day gifts, they’re likely to find increased prices on jewelry and flowers in May.
