Dayton Signs Bill Stripping Abusers Of Guns
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Gov. Mark Dayton has signed a bill restricting gun possession rights for people convicted of domestic abuse and those subject to restraining orders.
The measure was among 19 bills signed by Dayton Friday.
The bill requires people convicted of child or domestic abuse to give up their firearms permanently. A person subject to an order of protection could regain right of possession when an order expires unless a judge extends the order.
It's rare for Minnesota to tighten gun laws. Advocates cited statistics they said showed the chances of an abuse victim dying due to domestic violence rise when a gun is present.
