MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 24-year-old man is dead after leading police on a high-speed chase through Farmington, Minn. and eventually, crashing into a tree in Red Wing.

The Minnesota State Patrol said the accident happened just off Highway 61 on Cannon River Avenue.

According to police, officers began the pursuit in Farmington, continuing east into Red Wing where stop sticks were deployed.

Police say the car was eastbound on Cannon River Avenue when it left the roadway and struck a tree.

Cody Swanson, of Farmington, died in the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt. Swanson was also cited in 2010 for not wearing a seat belt.

A Farmington officer, an 8-year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave per standard procedure.

The State Patrol is investigating.
