MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Police officers subdued a 22-year-old man who began to cut his own throat after he was suspected of brutally assaulting his girlfriend Saturday.

Fridley Police responded to reports of a domestic situation at 6373 Pierce St. NE, and encountered 22-year-old James Ahlers, who began to cut his throat before officers intervened.

He was taken to Mercy Hospital and placed under police custody.

A 23-year-old woman was also at the scene and had been beaten, dragged by her hair and stabbed multiple times – including in the throat.

She was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, and her injuries are described as non-life threatening.

Fridley Police and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office are investigating. Ahlers is expected to be charged by the Anoka County Attorney’s Office in the coming days.
