MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The Watonwan County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a newborn baby in Butterfield, Minn.

At 5:45 p.m. Friday, deputies responded to a home on 120 3rd Street North to the report of an unresponsive newborn. The newborn was pronounced dead by the medical examiner and the body was then taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

A 14-year-old girl was taken to the Saint James Mayo Hospital and later transferred to Mankato Mayo Hospital.

Chief Deputy Jeremy Nachreiner says authorities can’t confirm whether or not the 14-year-old girl is the mother of the newborn. There is a language barrier that authorities are trying to work through.

No arrests have been made, but the case remains under investigation.

Butterfield is located approximately 45 miles southwest of Mankato.
