Fmr. Sheriff's Deputy Arrested In Connection With Fitchburg Double Homicide

FITCHBURG, Wis. (WCCO) — A former sheriff's deputy in Wisconsin is accused of killing his wife and her sister, both of whom grew up in Stillwater.

Ashlee Steele, 39, of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, and her sister, Kacee Tollefsbol, 38, of Lake Elmo, were found shot to death inside Steele's home on Friday.

Former Dane County Sheriff's Deputy Andy Steele, 39, has been arrested in connection with the double homicide.

"There is going to have to be some healing going on up here," Fitchburg Mayor Shawn Pfaff said.

Andy had been diagnosed in June with ALS, sometimes known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. He had retired as a sheriff's deputy.

Ashlee and Kacee had been raising money for his medical costs with an online campaign called "Tough As Steele - Taking Down ALS".

The Ice Bucket Challenge was the latest fundraiser they held for Andy, one he took part in himself earlier this month.

"She was just the sweetest person," Tollefsbol's neighbor Cathee Steeves said. "So good with her kids. She seemed so happy right now with her life, the way it was going."

Tollefsbol, a nursing student, just got married this summer and was a mother of four. The Steele's have two children. The sisters were both graduates of Stillwater Area High School.

"The kids are very much being taken care of. We have an excellent family unit and they're receiving lots of love and care right now," uncle Daniel Dupuis said.

Steele is in police custody as he's being treated for injuries. Police wouldn't say if they were self-inflicted.

Steele has not been charged.  Investigators haven't discussed any possible motives for the shootings.
