DNR Dogs Trained To Sniff Out Zebra Mussels
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has a new, four-legged partner in fighting the spread of aquatic, invasive species.
Highly-trained dogs can sniff out just about anything, from drugs to bombs. But these ones are detecting zebra mussels.
It's all in a day's work for Brady. The dog's conservation officer handler Julie Siems said Brady thinks it's a game. He knows when he finds an odor he's been trained to find, he sits and then gets his reward.
In his case, it's some quality time chasing balls.
Siems said zebra mussels and other invasive species are often difficult to detect with the human eye, so sniffing skills like Brady's go a long way in stopping their spread.
