Zebra Mussels Confirmed In 2 Metro Lakes

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Zebra mussels have infested two Twin Cities lakes, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

DNR biologists reportedly found three zebra mussels in both Lake Waconia and White Bear Lake. Both lakes were investigated after the DNR received reports from the public.

The DNR said one report came from a local high school science teacher who was snorkeling in White Bear Lake. In Lake Waconia, the DNR received two reports -- one from a boater who found a zebra mussel stuck to his vessel and one from an angler who found zebra mussels stuck to aquatic plants on his trailer.

The location and size of the zebra mussels suggest natural reproduction could be occurring, according to DNR officials.

Signs will be posted at White Bear Lake and Lake Waconia. The DNR encourages people to watch for invasive species when removing docks, boat lifts, swim rafts and other equipment from the water. If a zebra mussel is suspected, the exact location should be noted, photo taken and the specimen should be kept until a DNR specialist can identify it.
