Will Twins' New Manager Hire Be Internal?

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - It was hard to imagine the Minnesota Twins parting ways with manager Ron Gardenhire.

But four losing seasons have cost him his job, even though the talent pool of his ball-club is well below the standards expected to compete.

But that's the Twins: Gardenhire out and Terry Ryan will stay on as General Manager.

His 13 years at the helm was quite the run, including frequent post-season appearances and, yes, some ejections.

But today was a decision that you could see coming--he was simply the next fall guy.

"The reason for this change, I think it's safe to say the last couple years, we've not won enough games," general manager Terry Ryan said. "That's about what it comes down to--it's nothing more, nothing less than that."

If they go internal, there are three candidates that could have a shot.

Terry Steinbach manged in Gardenhire's absence over the past couple years and has a catcher's background.

Paul Molitor re-joined the staff this season. He's been viewed as a favorite of the Pohlads. We'll find out if they intervene much in the process.

And Gene Glynn, who's been managing the Rochester Red Wings, has spent several seasons in the big leagues as a coach.
