Facebook Fans Name Baby Zebra At Como Zoo

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- The Como Zoo's newest baby zebra now has a name.

Facebook fans voted and chose the name Ruckus.

With nearly 3,000 responses, Ruckus beat out ZigZga and Mayhem with 42 percent of the vote.

The Como Zoo's current herd of zebra now consists of five -- Ulysses, Minnie, Thelma, Melee and now, of course, Ruckus.

Ruckus was born to Thelma and Ulysses on Sept. 7.

Como Zoo officials say the gestation period for zebras ranges from 10 to 12 months. For a newborn zebra, their stripes will start as brown and then turn black sometime between the first nine to 18 months of life.

The zebras at Como are Grant's Zebras -- commonly found in the grassy plains of eastern Africa, such as Kenya and Ethiopia.
