Get Movin' Monday: 5 Styling Tips For Your Wardrobe

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A new season gives you an opportunity to make some changes, even spruce up the wardrobe you already have. But buying into every trend can be really expensive.

Local stylist Grant Whittaker helps you get movin' on your wardrobe by giving you five styling tips on what to invest in.

Grethen House in Edina is considered the Barney's of the Twin Cities by fashion stylists.

"You want new stuff in your wardrobe. You want to be on trend but it can be really expensive if you buy everything," Whittaker said. "In terms of trends, they come and go, we know that, but there are those investment pieces -- I like to call them that -- so the best bang for your buck."

No. 1: Leather
Leather is hot right now -- skirts, shirts, pants. But Whittaker says invest in a jacket.

"It's a piece that's going to last you forever. And the nice thing that kind of makes it through the years for you is that it's the first time, probably in a number of seasons, that you're going to get it in every cut for everybody, every size, every color, every, everything," he said.

No. 2: Colors
Invest in something you like in a high-end fabric.

"For the first time, we're seeing a lot of different cashmeres, cashmere blends, wool blends, things that are really soft that will lay on your body in great colors. It becomes an investment piece but it becomes something special in your closet," he said.

Whittaker said pick your favorite color, you'll wear it forever, instead of picking a trendy color you're tired of next season.

No. 3: Understated Fur and Faux Fur
Get pieces for every day wear that won't go out of style from year to year.

"Even as basic as taking a cami and jeans would be great, taking something like this and throwing it over a dress would be super easy," he said, while demonstrating. "It's kind of dressy and it can be casual and it's super comfortable."

No. 4: Prints
Don't be scared of it, but find it in a classic top so you'll continue to mix it into your wardrobe.

"You're investing in something that has a little print, a little bit of sheer detail, a little bit of color, it shouldn't become trendy, it should become more of a staple," he said.

No. 5: Neo-Preen.
What's that? I didn't know either.

"It does come from being a scuba fabric but it's been developed," he said. "It's easy to print pattern on, you can make it thinner or thicker and it just develops all over the board."

It's not just for the ladies -- men are getting neo-preen, too, because it's easy to pack and won't wrinkle and it lasts forever.

The best part? Like a wet suit, it sucks everything in.

Now the pieces Whittaker shows in the video above are expensive -- a few hundred to a thousand dollars for the coats.

That's not necessarily realistic for everyone, even as an investment, so he says take the pieces as inspiration and find similar pieces at the outlets or TJMaxx and Marshalls.
