Top 10 Spooky Songs – Monster Edition
It's that time of year again.
The winds begin to howl, the leaves crackle and whisper and the moon casts indiscernible shadows. Chills riffle through your body, despite being warm.
It is Halloween.
In honor of this haunting holiday, our sister station 104.1 JACK-FM decided to put together a list of the top spooky songs that pertain to one subset of frightening characters – monsters.
While these may not send a chill down your spine on fear factor alone, they may out of pure enjoyment.

10. Somebody's Watching Me – Rockwell
Rockwell's 1984 hit (and only hit) earns the slightly honorary spot for a few reasons. First, it's not directly about monsters, but we don't really know who, or what, is watching Rockwell. Second, Grammy winner Michael Jackson sings backup to this one-hit-wonder artist, which is enough of a reason to listen. Lastly, the video itself is frightening. Frighteningly bad.

9. "Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)" – David Bowie
David Bowie's "Scary Monsters" isn't about your typical monster, but rather, for some, the scariest monster of all – a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It has been said there is nothing scarier than an angry woman, and Bowie backs that up. Also, as an artist, Bowie embodies Halloween. Few artists have undergone more transformations, or worn more costumes.

8. "Oogie Boogie's Song" – Danny Elfman
The Nightmare Before Christmas is full of great songs, so it's difficult to only choose one (or in the case of this list, two) terrifying tunes. Danny Elfman's "Oogie Boogie's Song" makes the list because it is Halloween at its best. Not only is this ghostly tune sung about the terrifying things we always worried the Boogie Man would do, it's sung by the Boogie Man himself!

7. "Werewolves of London" – Warren Zevon
Some may consider werewolves their own subgenre of scary movie creatures, but for the sake of the list they can fit neatly underneath the monster subheader. "Werewolves of London" offers a catchy hook and a howling chorus. Plus, the subject of the song can't get much more gruesome as you hear about him ripping lungs out and mutilating women.

6. "Furry Happy Monsters" – REM
It's only fair to show the gentler side of monsters. Thus, we chose REM's "Furry Happy Monsters." REM remade their hit "Shiny Happy People" for their appearance on the family-friendly "Sesame Street." While the song may not ignite fear in people's hearts (unless you're afraid of puppets), it features dancing monster Muppets and shows a softer side to the normally demonized creatures.
