Search Continues For Man Who Went Missing On Medicine Lake

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A second day of searching has turned up no sign of a Twin Cities man who vanished on a lake.

St. Louis Park resident Paul Myklebust, 31, and another man were kayaking on Medicine Lake early Saturday morning when the kayak flipped. The other man made it to shore, but Myklebust didn't.

Crews searched for him all night. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office said the search could take days.

Members of Myklebust's family stood on the shore of Medicine Lake Sunday. They say they won't leave until they know something about his disappearance.

What they do know is Myklebust was at a house party with co-workers and was last seen in a kayak with a friend around 2 a.m. Saturday.

"That other gentleman in the kayak did make it to shore, went to a residence nearby and we are now able to talk to him," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.

Stanek did not say what that friend told them or why they waited more than five hours before calling for help.

When deputies reached the lake, they found an overturned kayak, a jacket floating in the water and friends of Myklebust looking for him.

"The information from him and some of the other folks has been have been sketchy, but that is part of the ongoing investigation," Stanek said.

Stanek would not classify Myklebust's disappearance as suspicious. He says this is a search for a missing person and will continue to be that until Myklebust is located.

"We are looking for is the public's help it is entirely possible he went to a residence it's entirely possible he wandered away from here, but for now our search efforts are focused on medicine Lake here," Stanek said.

More than 50 deputies from Hennepin, Anoka and Washington counties searched Medicine Lake Sunday.

Investigators think Myklebust and his friend may have been drinking before their kayak tipped.
