St. Paul Schools Not Changing Start Times

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) – Despite a push to change starting times in the St. Paul School District, changes won't be made next year.

The St. Paul School Board voted Tuesday night to wait at least one more year before considering the change. The move to change start times came up because of research out of the University of Minnesota that finds teens do better in class with more sleep. Several other districts have made the change.

St. Paul was considering it, but would have move elementary school start times earlier to accommodate for bus routes. After looking at the impact on families, board members felt there was a significant concern about shifting elementary schools to a 7:30 a.m. start.

The school board voted 4-3 to not change high school start times next year, but will bring it back up as a possibility for the 2016-2017 school year.
