Wander Minnesota: Halloween Minus The Scares

Halloween is almost here. There are tons of scary things to do for older Halloween fans. But where you can take the little, more easily scared ones?

The Minnesota Zoo offers HallZooween throughout October, with daily events like a Halloween Mythbusters scavenger hunt. On weekends, kids can get their faces painted, meet all kinds of animals, and enjoy treats.

Como Zoo has plans too. ZooBoo takes place Oct. 18-19 and 24-26 and is designed for kids ages 3-10. Trick-or-treating will be offered, but the real treat will be seeing the zoo grounds transformed into a fairy-tale world, along with live entertainment.

Valleyfair's Planet Snoopy becomes Planet Spooky from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 2. There will be live entertainment, a corn maze, a costume parade, and the Cock-a-Doodle Zoo and the Silly Cyclone Cycle Course.

Are you a member of the Minnesota Children's Museum? If not, it might be time to join. A members-only Halloween Party on Oct. 29 and 30 will allow kids to trick-or-treat throughout Our World, see animals at night in Earth World, and meet Clifford the Big Red Dog. Advance registration is strongly recommended.

Not to be outdone, the nearby Science Museum of Minnesota has plenty of plans too. On Oct. 25, visit the Boo-ology, enjoy hands-on, Halloween-themed science projects. Kids under 12 in costume receive free admission to the permanent exhibitions gallery.

That evening is an even bigger event: the 14th Annual Family Halloween Camp-in. Stay overnight, explore the museum, trick-or-treat, and watch shows in the OmniTheater and the Science Live Theater.

Three Rivers Park District has numerous events across its park system, including Baker Boo! at Baker Park (ghoulish golfing!), Old-Fashioned Trick-or-Treat at The Landing, and an Enchanted Forest Halloween at Lowry Nature Center.

What else is happening in our state? Be sure to check out the 10 p.m. Sunday night WCCO newscasts, where you can learn more in the weekly segment, Finding Minnesota.
