Teal Pumpkin Project For Kids With Allergies On Halloween
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- When you're out trick or treating this year, you may notice something different on doorsteps. Instead of the traditional orange pumpkin, some households will be displaying teal-colored ones.
It's part of a new effort from the Food and Allergy Research and Education Organization.
Their "Teal Pumpkin Project" encourages people to put a painted pumpkin outside their door if they are offering non-food treats for kids with allergies.
Food allergies can be life threatening and they affect 1-in-13 children in the United States.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies among children has increased 50 percent over the past decade.
If you want to participate in the effort, the group suggests giving out things like small toys, stickers and crayons instead of candy.
