Get Movin' Monday: How To Accessorize Your Fall Outfits

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- When you see someone who is stylish, they make it look effortless. A lot of the time, it's not necessarily the clothes but the accessories that pull an outfit together.

This week in Get Movin' Monday, Jamie Yuccas caught up with local stylist Grant Whittaker to get four tips on how to accessorize your outfit.

When it comes to fall fashion, sometimes we can get lazy and color goes out the window. People just want to wear black, grey or brown. Whittaker says that idea is out. He says for his first accessory tip, if you go shopping for scarves make sure they have a pattern.

"Here we have the kind of graffiti mix of print, we have something a little more conservative, and then we have something like this where we had someone say let's go Asian Pacific," Whittaker said. "You can take an accessory like a scarf and play up your jeans, play up your denim. It doesn't have to be a big buy for the season."

His second tip is all about mittens. As much as you want to look stylish, you need to make sure what you wear keeps you warm and be practical. Gloves are playing into every trend this year coming in fur, leather and bright colors.

"Sometimes you go a little casual with the mitten, but here you make it more dressy. It goes back to that kind of whimsy in fashion," Whittaker said.

His third tip: The handbag is smaller this season, while staying useful in the every day.

"Women go, is it a need to buy? And it's something you tend to buy with a special event, but there are more practical handbags this season," Whittaker said.

Find a size and ethnic pattern -- like Aztec, Indian or Nordic -- that you'll be comfortable carrying what you need to the grocery store, or wearing to a dress up event.

"It's classic but you have that fun detailing. It's probably meant for evening but you can take it into the day and wear it with a leather coat," Whittaker said.

His fourth tip is with jewelry. Whittaker says it should be bigger and badder than ever before.

"It is about having that one big statement piece," Whittaker said. "This season, jewelry kind of went from being basic to full on drama."

Whittaker says don't be afraid of color, and don't let the color be the only pop.

"I know it sounds strange but you use something like this as a neutral," he said.

Whittaker says you can pair this with the darker tones out for fall and then use it again in the spring with the softer hues.

"You're going to see so many styles, but it's really about what you feel comfortable in," he said.

Whittaker says items like handbags and scarves should be more investment pieces you'll like and use for a long time. With Jewelry and mittens, you can go cheaper and super trendy for a fun look just this season.
