14-Year-Old Hockey Player Dies In Brainerd Tournament

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - A 14-year old Eastview hockey player died in a tournament Friday evening.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. at the Brainerd Area Civic Center, where the Blue Ox hockey tournament was being held.

Brainerd Police say the boy collapsed and went unconscious during a game.

A paramedic at the rink immediately responded and began to help the boy.

They gave him CPR, and he was then flown  to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, but attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The boy's name is not being released.

The Brainerd Amateur Hockey Association announced that the tournament has been canceled.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the player's family, teammates and coaches," the association said in a statement. "Our focus is on all the youth athletes and their families. In respect of this tragedy, we have decided to cancel the remainder of the Blue Ox hockey tournament."

Minnesota Hockey released a statement Saturday saying, "We are deeply saddened by the news and offer our sincere condolences to the player's family, friends and teammates. The thoughts and prayers of the entire Minnesota Hockey community are with the player's family during this tragic time of loss."
