Uptown Coffee Festival Celebrates 25th Anniversary

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Here's a perk-me-up. The Uptown Coffee Festival is celebrating its 25th year this weekend.

Quite a bit has changed in the world of coffee since the festival began, according to Kitchen Window owner Doug Huemoeller. He said when the event started, the idea of specialty coffee -- as opposed to instant coffee from a can -- was quite unique.

"Now people are so familiar with specialty coffees. It's part of their lifestyle, they're going to coffee houses, and they're using all sorts of brewing methods to make their own coffee at home," Huemoeller said.

The 25th Annual Uptown Coffee Festival starts at 10 a.m. Saturday morning and runs until 3 p.m. The admission is $10, which in addition to admittance also gets you a coffee mug, and proceeds from the event go to the House of Charity.

As an added bonus, Huemoeller shared with WCCO's Ali Lucia a special recipe that uses coffee for a savory treat. Here are instructions for how to make Coffee Spiced Roasted Pork Belly:

Ingredients

1 Pork Belly
Salt
Pepper
4 cups Ground Coffee
1/2 cup Brown Sugar
4 teaspoons Coriander
4 teaspoons Cumin
4 teaspoons Cinnamon
4 teaspoons Cardamom
4 teaspoons Coca Powder

Directions

Bring pork belly to room temp. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Score the skin of the belly on a cross hatch pattern at ¼ inch.

Season the belly liberally with salt and black pepper.

Combine all other ingredients, mix well and rub on all sides of the pork.

Place the belly in a high-sided baking dish and roast at 325 degrees for 45 minutes, then decrease the temperature to 275 degree for approximately 2 hours until meat is tender and soft all the way through.
