Officials Urge Caution On The Ice As Temperatures Rise
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Several law enforcement agencies across Minnesota are urging caution on the ice as temperatures over the weekend climbed to unseasonable highs.
Officials in Kandiyohi, Otter Tail and Douglas counties have reported cars, snowmobiles and four-wheelers breaking through the weak ice. However, as of writing, there have been no reports of injuries.
The ice on bodies of water across the state has weakened as temperatures rose into the 50s over the weekend. The average high in Minnesota during the month of December is in the upper 20s.
Officials say that those who venture out near the ice should wear proper clothing, a life jacket and carry ice picks or lengths of rope. Driving on the ice is not recommended until temperatures fall back below freezing.
