Make Holiday Returns Easier By Following These Tips

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – We all know that it's the thought that counts.

But sometimes you get a gift that you just don't know what to do with!

Instead of letting it sit in a closet, many of us will opt to head back to the stores or mall to return said gift.

WCCO's Ashley Roberts has some do's and don'ts when it comes to bringing back those unwanted gifts.

Stores across the country are gearing up as Friday is going to be a busy day for holiday returns.

Many people are still off work for the holiday, which will make the rush even busier.

According to the National Retail Federation, nearly 40-percent of consumers will return at least one of their holiday gifts.

The National Retail Federation also found that Friday will be the second busiest shopping day of the year, as far as in-store traffic.

So if you're among those who are heading out to return gifts, here are some tips for making the process fast and easy.

Keep Gifts In Good Condition: Retailers will resist taking back a purchase that's not in good condition or in the original packaging.

Whether it's clothing or consumer electronics, make sure the item is free of wear and that you have all of the parts.

Don't Stress The Receipt: Having a gift receipt handy in case it's needed for a return is ideal. But don't worry if you've misplaced it. Odds are your ID will work. In fact it's a good idea to have identification handy, the National Retail Federation said about 70 percent of retailers are now requiring customers who are returning an item without a receipt to show identification. That's their way of cutting back on fraud

Return Deadlines: Be aware of how much time you have to return your unwanted items. In most cases, stores extend their return policy during the holidays.

And, as always, be nice! Kindness can often go a long way.
