From Driving To The Hoop To Driving A Squad Car

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - Hamline women's basketball player Jordan Sammons leads the MIAC in several statistical categories. Judging by her pre-game introduction, dropping hints is one of them.

Forget for a moment that she leads the conference in scoring.

Or how a player who's only 5-foot-8 can be second in rebounding.

"A lot of people ask that," Sammons said with a laugh. "It's just determination, wanting to get it."

What Sammons is known for is her steals. Not only is she leading the conference this season, but she's just 30 shy of being No. 1 all-time.

"My coaches say I'm pretty aggressive," she said. "You want to make the other players uncomfortable."

Which brings us back to the hint-dropping. Because there's a certain irony in the fact that the player who's about to become the conference's all-time leader in steals wants to be a cop.

"I watched a lot of CSI growing up," Sammons said with a laugh. "I thought that was always cool, but I wasn't really a science kind of person. So I was thinking detective work, [but] I was, like, I kind of want to be more involved in the community and want to help people."

She graduates with a degree in criminal justice this spring, but there's more to accomplish on the court first.

If she continues at her current pace, Sammons will not only be the all-time conference leader in steals, but also points. That's a rare combination of offense and defense. The very definition of a two-way player.

"I've always been an offensive and defensive player, so I love getting steals and fastbreak points," she said. "But I worked hard in the off-season to get a better outside game, because everyone knows me as a driver."

Someday soon, the driver of a police car. If she ever pulls you over, just compliment her on her jump shot.

It just might get you out of a ticket.
